Submission Wrestling : Bart vs Jelle

Inside the boxing ring of Kassem Gym in Alphen aan den Rijn, Bart and Jelle step into a new kind of GRPL Submission Wrestling match. After a catch wrestling seminar hosted by Kassem Gym and DojoLink, these two experienced GRPL athletes meet in a compact, intense setting where pressure, control, and choke attacks become even more important.

This match introduces a different GRPL format. Instead of three separate rounds, Bart and Jelle compete in one continuous 7-minute round of choke-only Submission Wrestling. Every successful choke submission scores one point, followed immediately by a standing reset. When the 7 minutes are over, the fighter with the most points wins. That format creates a constant sense of urgency: no round breaks, no long reset between phases, and no time to slowly grow into the match.

The Match Breakdown

This matchup creates a fascinating contrast between size, experience, and grappling style. Jelle enters the match as the heavier athlete and brings the physical tools of a judo black belt. His standing game, balance, and strength make him dangerous in every clinch exchange. Bart, however, brings more GRPL experience and a BJJ background that gives him a clear understanding of positional control, back takes, and submission opportunities.

The boxing ring adds another unique layer to the match. Unlike an open tatami space, the ring changes how athletes move, defend, and reset their position. The ropes, corners, and tighter visual environment make the action feel more compact. Every exchange feels close, and every positional battle becomes more intense because there is less room to disengage.

From the opening moments, Bart uses his grappling experience to dictate the pace. He constantly forces Jelle to defend, react, and fight for space. In a choke-only Submission Wrestling match, this kind of pressure is extremely valuable. Control is not enough by itself, but control creates the openings needed to attack the neck.

Jelle’s judo background keeps the match dangerous. Even when Bart builds momentum, Jelle has the strength and balance to make every exchange difficult. His physical advantage means Bart has to stay disciplined and avoid giving up sudden reversals or standing opportunities. That tension gives the match a clear tactical layer: Bart needs to turn experience into submission threats, while Jelle needs to use strength and judo instincts to disrupt the rhythm.

As the 7-minute round continues, fatigue becomes a major factor. Without traditional round breaks, every scramble costs energy and every defensive reaction becomes heavier. Bart’s pressure, positional control, and repeated attempts to create back exposure make the match a demanding test of endurance for Jelle. The threat of the rear naked choke becomes especially important, because back control is one of the clearest paths to scoring under the GRPL ruleset.

This match is a strong example of how GRPL’s choke-only format can adapt into different environments. A boxing ring, a single continuous round, and two athletes with contrasting strengths create a match that feels different from a standard tatami bout. It is compact, physical, and built around the constant question of who can turn control into a successful choke.

A big thank you to Kassem Gym for making the boxing ring available for this GRPL match, and to both Kassem Gym and DojoLink for hosting the catch wrestling seminar that made this setting possible.
